The Internet is a world-wide network of computers linked together by telecommunications systems. Individual personal computers at home are connected to the Internet using modems either through telephone lines or cable links. What is the World Wide Web? The World Wide Web (or WWW) is a network of computers on the Internet which store information in a special format known as a 'web site'. Each web site contains a number of electronic 'pages' containing text and pictures (and sometimes sound and moving pictures too). These pages can also contain 'links', usually shown as blue, underlined, or bold text. Clicking on a link takes you to another page which could be on the same computer as the previous one, or it could come from thousands of miles away on any other computer on the Web. How do you get on it? First of all you need a modem installed in your computer. This is a device which sends and receives information from computer to computer via a phone line. Then you need to make sure your computer can decipher the information with a piece of software called a browser. If you want to send and receive e-mail you will also need an e-mail program. After that all you do is give Moonlight a call. (If you don't have any of the above just ring us anyway; we'll sort it out for you) What is Moonlight? Moonlight is an Internet Service Provider. E-mail (or electronic mail) is simply a way of sending text messages to other people who have Internet access; although just like the post you can include other files and documents ~even graphics and video files. Its cheaper than the phone, faster than the post, less messy than a fax and can get to the other side of the world in seconds. In other words it is one of the most efficient ways of communicating in this day and age. An e-mail address is the address of the person to whom you are sending the e-mail. When you set up your account with Moonlight we will give you your very own personalised e-mail address so you can receive your own e-mails which looks something like this: john.smith@moon-light.co.uk Moonlight can also provide you with more than one e-mail address so other members of the household can send and receive personal e-mails.
